Somatic Experiencing

Somatic Experiencing (SE) is a body-focused therapeutic approach developed by Dr. Peter Levine that helps individuals process and heal trauma by addressing the way it is stored in the body. Based on the understanding that trauma affects not only the mind but also the body, Somatic Experiencing works by helping people release stored tension, restore nervous system balance, and heal from traumatic experiences.

This therapeutic method emphasizes the body's innate ability to heal itself when given the appropriate tools and support. Through Somatic Experiencing, individuals are guided to become more aware of bodily sensations and use this awareness to process and release traumatic energy stored in the nervous system.

How does Somatic Experiencing work?

Somatic Experiencing works by helping individuals track and process physical sensations in their body that are related to past traumatic experiences. Unlike traditional talk therapy, which primarily focuses on thoughts and emotions, SE directly addresses the physical manifestations of trauma.

The approach involves:

  • Body Awareness: Clients are gently encouraged to pay attention to the sensations in their body—such as tension, tightness, or discomfort—that often accompany trauma or emotional distress. By focusing on these physical sensations, clients can begin to release pent-up energy and emotions that were previously suppressed.

  • Pendulation: This technique involves moving between states of discomfort (where trauma may be stored) and states of comfort or safety. This process allows the body to experience both extremes, without being overwhelmed by the trauma, enabling the nervous system to gradually reset itself.

  • Titration: In SE, trauma is processed in small, manageable doses. Instead of diving straight into traumatic memories, clients work with the smallest amount of discomfort necessary to begin the healing process. This gradual approach helps prevent overwhelming emotions from resurfacing and promotes gentle integration of traumatic experiences.

  • Resourcing: This involves creating a mental or physical “resource” that helps the individual feel safe and grounded. It can be a positive memory, a comforting place, or a supportive internal image. These resources provide a sense of stability and safety during the process of trauma release.

  • Discharge: As clients process their trauma, they may experience physical sensations such as shaking, heat, or a feeling of release. These physical discharges are the body's natural way of letting go of stuck trauma, allowing the nervous system to return to a regulated state.

What does Somatic Experiencing help?

Somatic Experiencing is highly effective in treating various emotional and physical conditions, particularly those stemming from trauma. Some of the issues SE can help with include:

  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

  • Childhood trauma and neglect

  • Anxiety and panic attacks

  • Chronic stress and emotional dysregulation

  • Depression

  • Phobias

  • Sexual and physical abuse

  • Chronic pain and tension

  • Addictions and compulsive behaviors

  • Sleep disturbances

  • Dissociation or feeling disconnected from the body

  • Grief and loss

By working directly with the nervous system, Somatic Experiencing helps individuals process deep-seated trauma that might not have been accessible through traditional therapies.
