Accelerated Resolution Therapy

Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) is an innovative, evidence-based therapeutic approach designed to help individuals quickly process and resolve trauma, anxiety, and other emotional distress. ART combines elements of traditional psychotherapy with eye movements and imagery techniques, creating a powerful method for reprocessing painful memories and helping individuals achieve emotional healing in a shorter amount of time compared to conventional therapies.

Developed by Dr. Laney Rosenzweig, ART has been shown to help individuals reframe distressing memories and reduce their emotional charge, enabling them to move forward in a healthier, more balanced way.

How does Accelerated Resolution Therapy work?

ART works by using a series of eye movements to help the brain process and reframe distressing memories. These eye movements are similar to those used in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy, but ART integrates other techniques that make the process faster and more efficient. The therapy is typically completed in fewer sessions than traditional trauma-focused therapies.

Key components of ART include:

  • Imagery Reprocessing: Clients are guided to visualize distressing memories in a way that helps neutralize their emotional impact. By changing the image associated with a traumatic memory—sometimes by making the memory less vivid, altering its visual qualities, or replacing it with a new image—the emotional charge attached to the memory is reduced.

  • Eye Movement Desensitization: During the session, clients follow the therapist’s hand movements with their eyes. This bilateral stimulation helps activate both hemispheres of the brain, which in turn facilitates the reprocessing of the memory and reduces the emotional intensity associated with it.

  • Resource Building: ART therapists work with clients to create positive imagery and coping resources that they can rely on when distressing emotions or memories arise. This process helps increase the client’s sense of safety and control, fostering healing.

  • Rapid Processing: One of the primary features of ART is the speed at which it works. While traditional trauma therapies often require months of work, ART aims to bring relief in as few as 1-5 sessions. This makes ART especially appealing for individuals seeking a quicker resolution to their emotional struggles.
